In the beginning there was a fourteen year old who taught herself to knit from a book. Her first project was a grey checkerboard scarf for her dad, and he actually wore it! Her second was a stocking stitch sweater for herself in the round from the bottom up. By the time she got to the underarms she was told she'd been wrapping the wool the wrong way and all her knit stitches were twisted. Lesson learned: big mistakes become part of the design, or "I meant to do it that way". Over thirty years later I still meant to do it that way.
